Harrietta Potter

This was a topic on a recent Mugglecast... Did any of you guys listen to it? Would the Harry Potter series be less successful if the main character in the series was a girl? What aspects of the series would change? You can see the Mugglecast here. I have an opinion but I am not going to share it until other people reply because then everyone will just agree with me.

  1. I listened to that one! I don't think it would've been as successful because girls don't mind reading about guys, but I don't think a guy would really enjoy reading about a girl. I'm not really sure why that is though...but it's the same reason J.K. Rowling used her first initials and not her name, right?

  2. I think the stereotype is that guys are braver and less worrysome about getting hurt. It may be the same reason why superheroes are generally guys too. Of course, there are always exceptions, but J.K. Rowling may be just fullfilling the stereotype.

  3. J.K. Rowling is really good with creating characters, and Harry is a character we have all grown to love. If Harry was a girl, you would lose a lot of the great things about his character. A lot of the descisions Harry makes that lead him into trouble, or into funny circumstances, he would probably not make if he was a girl. Girls minds are wired in totally different ways then boys are, so watching a girl grow up over seven years would be very, very different then watching a boy. J.K. Rowling is an amazing author though, she may have been able to create a just as strong and real character as Harry is.
